Abstract:This study explores the features of cultural identity of China’s English news writers through comparing the coverage of the 2021 catchword tang ping in Chinese and Western media. From the three perspectives of the reporting approach, the appraisal system and journalistic voices, the study analyzes the quantitative and qualitative differences between China and the West in their English news discourse, in an attempt to discuss how China’s English news achieves the goal of international communication by constructing interpersonal meanings and negotiating identities. Findings indicate that overall the tang ping coverage in both media displays fairly consistent frequency and distribution patterns in the sub-systems of attitude, engagement and graduation. The Chinese media employ more positive expressions than the Western media, with a tendency to present facts through the “reporter voice薰. Finally, while the Western media focus on the tang ping lifestyle itself, the Chinese media apply the term to various domains, highlighting the Chinese stance, and enacting the cultural identity of China’s news writers.
