On the Translation of the Cultural Loaded Words in the Schools Sayings of Confucius From the Perspective of the Translator Behavior Criticism —A Case Study of Kramers’ Translation
Culture-loaded words bear unique and complicated cultural features of a nation. The immense cultural differences cause difficulties in their translation. A good case in point is the translation of Chinese classical works with rich historical and cultural information. Translator behavior criticism, as a translation theory created in China, combines “intra-translation” with “extra-translation”, promoting the development of translation criticism. Based on the Truth-seeking and Utility-attaining Continuum Model of Evaluation in the translator behavior criticism theory, this paper first explores the translator’s behavior of the Dutch Sinologist Robert P. Kramers in the translation and introduction of the School Sayings of Confucius and then discusses Kramers’ translation characteristics of cultureloaded words in this book to clarify his translation strategies and overall tendency in dealing with culture loaded words. This study is expected to shed light on the English translation of Chinese classics.
